Red-crowned Crane
(Grus japonensis)
Frequently appearing in traditional Korean imagery—
such as folk paintings and Korean Hwa-tu cards—the crane has long been regarded as a distinctly Korean bird.
But Today, the Red-crowned Crane is an endangered species.
There are only about 3,300 individuals left worldwide,
and nearly 1,500 of them spend the winter in Korea.
They are precious migratory birds,
most commonly found in Yeoncheon, Paju, and Cheorwon,
before migrating to Russia and China in spring.
One of the cutest things about cranes is
their long and elegant legs.
Seeing them stand so gracefully on such slender legs never fails to amaze me.
This is Chichi-chit’s first long-legged bird,
with delicate details expressed through two subtle knots.
The second cute thing?
At sunset, cranes gather close together to sleep,
protecting themselves from predators.
A large flock of tall cranes standing together at dusk
is something I would truly love to witness someday.
Though… if I were there, I might be the predator — and they could be startled. 😢
